West Auckland’s next generation of storytellers is taking centre stage
Poetry, music and visual art are coming together this August as West Auckland’s emerging creatives prepare to showcase their talents at Wordcore Wayfinder’s, Illuminated Horizons.
Wordcore Wayfinders is a West Auckland arts collective helping emerging artists develop their craft through spoken word, storytelling and interdisciplinary art. By bringing together poets, musicians and visual artists, the collective creates opportunities for people who might never have considered themselves artists to build confidence, develop new skills and connect with their community.
The Trusts is proud to support Wordcore Wayfinders through the Your West Support Fund, helping deliver free creative workshops across West Auckland and the upcoming Illuminated Horizons showcase at Te Puna Creative Hub.
The funding helps remove barriers to participation by keeping workshops free, supporting artist mentoring, providing creative resources and ensuring artists are paid for their work.
Wordcore Co-Founder Christian Jensen says creating opportunities for artists to collaborate is at the heart of everything they do. “There is so much untapped creative talent in Auckland. We want to create opportunities where people can discover what they’re capable of and realise their stories deserve to be heard. The Trusts’ support helps us keep those opportunities accessible for everyone.”
The Trusts CEO Allan Pollard says supporting local creativity helps build stronger communities. “Creativity has the power to bring communities together and give people the confidence to share their stories. That’s exactly what Wordcore Wayfinders is doing, and we’re proud to help make those opportunities accessible for more West Aucklanders.”
Illuminated Horizons is the culmination of months of workshops and collaboration, pairing poets, musicians and visual artists who create entirely new performances exclusively for the festival. Many participants go on to mentor future artists, helping build a thriving creative community right here in West Auckland.
