Every rugby game needs someone with a whistle. And in The West, Waitakere Rugby Club is making sure the next generation of referees is already lacing up.
The club has been running a Junior Rugby Referee Programme this year, training young members to officiate junior games at their home club. It’s part coaching clinic, part leadership development, and it’s helping rangatahi see the game from a whole new perspective. For players who might not always be on the field, it opens up another way to stay involved. For the club, it means a healthy pipeline of officials so junior fixtures can keep running smoothly week after week.
Programmes like this are the quiet engine room of community sport. Referees are often the hardest role to fill at grassroots level, and building them from within the club, rather than relying on outside recruitment, is a sustainable way to keep the game growing.
Our team at The Good Home Waitakere, along with the Waitakere Rugby Old Boys, were proud to help out this year through The Trusts Supporters Club. The Supporters Club is one of five ways we return surplus profits from our venues and stores to the community, with venue-led grants of up to $500 supporting the local kaupapa our teams believe in.
As the club put it: “It’s with the awesome help of supporters, sponsors and funders that we are able to have programmes like this that grow our young people, our game and our Junior Club.”
That’s the bit that matters most. Community rugby in The West has always been about more than results on a Saturday. It’s about the coaches who show up early, the parents on the sideline, the volunteers running sausage sizzles, and now the young referees learning to make the tough calls with confidence. Every one of them is part of what keeps the club, and the wider community, ticking.
