There’s a new place in The West for women to pick up tools, learn practical skills, and build something to be proud of. WomenzShed has officially launched beginner-friendly woodworking and DIY workshops in West Auckland, and they’re open for bookings now.
WomenzShed’s mission is to create opportunities and pathways for girls and women to explore and develop skills in woodworking crafts and related professions. It’s a kaupapa built around access, encouragement, and hands-on learning in a space where beginners feel genuinely welcome.
The workshops are designed specifically for women, whether you’ve never used a power tool before or you’re keen to grow your confidence with more ambitious projects. Sessions are run in small groups by experienced women instructors who provide step-by-step guidance, so participants can learn at their own pace without feeling rushed or out of their depth.
As WomenzShed puts it: “We’re thrilled to be part of the West Auckland Community offering beginner-friendly woodworking and DIY workshops where women can learn practical skills in a welcoming and supportive environment. Whether you’ve never used a power tool before or want to build your confidence with hands-on projects, our workshops are designed to help women develop new skills.”
Why does it matter for The West? Skill-building spaces like this do more than teach people how to use a drill or a saw. They open doors. Woodworking and the trades are areas where women have historically been underrepresented, and giving locals the chance to learn in a supportive environment helps grow confidence, community connections, and, for some, whole new career pathways.
The West has always been a place where people roll up their sleeves and give things a go, so it’s fitting that WomenzShed has chosen to set up shop here. Whether participants are after a new hobby, a bit of self-sufficiency around the house, or a first step into something bigger, the invitation is the same: come along, have a crack, take something home.
