When an emergency hits, it’s the people next door who often matter most. That’s the kaupapa behind the Big Readiness Day Out, a Neighbours Day celebration hosted this March by Green Bay Community House, a grassroots hub that’s been quietly holding things together for local whānau for years.

Green Bay Community House runs programmes, services and initiatives that strengthen wellbeing and resilience right across the suburb. It’s also a designated Community Emergency Hub, which means when something goes wrong, whether that’s a storm, a flood or a longer event, it’s one of the places locals can gather, share information and support each other.

The Big Readiness Day Out brought that role to life. At the heart of the day was an interactive showcase of the Community Emergency Hub, with a simulated set-up so attendees could see exactly what to expect, how to prepare at home, and the part they could play in looking out for their neighbours. Green Bay Community House was joined by Auckland Emergency Management, Community Waitākere and the Whau Community Readiness Network, who were on hand with practical advice and resources for getting households sorted.

Alongside the serious stuff, the day was warm, welcoming and family-friendly. Outdoor games, interactive experiences, a bouncy castle and a free sausage sizzle made sure tamariki and rangatahi were just as engaged as the grown-ups.

Support from Bricklane, delivered through The Trusts Supporters Club, helped cover costs like signage, sponsored posts, the bouncy castle and the sausage sizzle. It’s a modest contribution in the scheme of things, but it helped keep the event free and accessible for everyone who turned up.

Why does this matter for The West? Because resilience isn’t built in a crisis, it’s built on ordinary days like this one. The more locals who know their neighbours, know where their nearest hub is, and know how to prepare, the stronger Green Bay and the wider West become when it counts. Green Bay Community House is doing the steady, generous work of weaving that network together, and we’re grateful to play a small part.
