The family-friendly Waitakere Hockey Club is going from strength to strength. Thanks to the club’s warm, welcoming vibe, player numbers are steadily increasing.
‘Our club is where players of all ages and skills come together to share their love for hockey and create lasting memories on and off the field,’ declares Treasurer Kelly Harold.
Last season, the club fielded a record-breaking 20 teams across senior, youth, and junior grades. There were several notable achievements, with two youth teams taking out the top spot in their championships. Furthermore, several youth players were selected for an Auckland representative trip to Fiji, and four represented Auckland at a tournament in Sydney.
Waitakere Hockey Club is based on Henderson High School’s turf. Kelly says that the 2022 addition of a purpose-built pavilion by Waitakere Hockey Regional Turf Trust has made a significant difference. The building boasts toilets, changing rooms, a multi-use space, and a fully equipped kitchen.
The pavilion means spectators can keep warm and dry and enjoy a chat over a coffee. ‘We’ve gained quite a reputation among the hockey community for our delicious match-day bacon and egg muffins,’ Kelly proudly says. She adds that it’s helped to develop the sense of community that Waitakere Hockey Club is known for.
The increase in player numbers was partly due to the help of the Your West Support Fund. Funding of $10,000 reduced the 2023 membership fees across the board by $50, making a massive difference to families grappling with the cost-of-living crisis.
‘Making membership fees affordable ensures the sport is more accessible to the community,’ advises Kelly. She says sport is crucial in bringing people together and promoting health and wellbeing, especially for young people. Furthermore, she reports that many adults want to play hockey but prioritise their children rather than themselves. ‘Thanks to our lower membership fees, we have whole families playing, which is fantastic,’ Kelly adds.
‘The Trusts has been a fantastic supporter of our club over the years, and we’re really grateful,’ declares Kelly.
The hockey season runs from March to August, and new members are always welcome. However, hockey enthusiasts can get their fix with the summer social hockey league. Check out the website for all the details.
