Since 1975, people of The West have been dancing a jig at Waitemata Scottish Country Dancing Club. Scottish country dancing is a fun, sociable dance style that hails from Scotland. It features groups of dancers performing a variety of steps and formations, all set to the lively beat of traditional Scottish tunes.
Based at Kelston Community Centre, Waitemata Scottish Country Dancing Club is part of a worldwide network. However, it’s the only one out West.
According to Esther Mackay, a tutor at the Waitemata Club, Scottish country dancing exercises the body and the brain and is a whole lot of fun. She says you don’t need any special equipment or even a dance partner. And despite the vast number of dances, most are composed of a few fundamental steps, making them quick and easy to learn. In next to no time, you can be twirling a reel like a pro.
The Waitemata Club meets on Tuesday evenings. There’s something for everyone, from seasoned veterans to newbies. A beginners’ class starts at 6.45 pm, and tutors are on hand to help you master the basics. The more advanced class starts at 7.45 pm.
Esther says Scottish country dancing is popular with people of all ages, with many children and teenagers taking up the pastime. Country dancing is low impact, making it perfect for all abilities.
The club is very friendly and welcoming. ‘Scottish country dancing offers the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends whilst also improving your fitness,’ advises Esther.
As a community-based organisation, the club is committed to keeping membership fees affordable. ‘We want to ensure that country dancing is accessible to as many people as possible,’ says Esther.
Thanks to $2,543 in funding from the 2023 Your West Support Fund, the club has been able to do just that. Esther advises that the funds have gone towards the costs of hiring Kelston Community Centre.
New members are always welcome at Waitemata Scottish Country Dancing Club, so put on your dancing shoes and give it a go. Check out the website for more information.
