Be our guest, West Auckland. Or rather, be their guest. Glass Ceiling Arts Collective is bringing Beauty and the Beast Jr. to Glen Eden Playhouse from 3 to 5 September, and the cast would love to see the place full.
Glass Ceiling creates theatre where performers with and without disabilities share the stage together. That means the roles, the songs, the choreography and the applause are open to everyone, which is still far rarer in the performing arts than it should be. For the young people involved, it is a chance to be on stage in a proper production, in their own community, in front of people who know them.
This show has taken months of rehearsal. Learning lines, learning harmonies, learning how to hold a moment when the lights come up. The team at Glass Ceiling Arts Collective has been clear about what they want on opening night: a sea of friendly faces looking back at their performers.
They have also thought carefully about who can actually get through the door. Alongside standard tickets, there are a limited number of Pay What You Can seats available for every performance. As the team put it, “We don’t want cost to be the reason someone misses out.” No one will be turned away because they cannot afford a ticket, unless the show has genuinely sold out.
