On Saturday, 1 June 2025, we had the absolute pleasure of attending the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival Family Fun Day, hosted by the Waitakere Chinese Association at Corban Estate Arts Centre in Henderson. It was a beautiful celebration of culture, community, and connection, and a powerful reminder of what makes West Auckland such a special place to live.
The Dragon Boat Festival is a treasured tradition in Chinese culture, and it was amazing to see how warmly it was embraced by the wider community. Families from all walks of life came together to enjoy delicious food, cultural performances, and craft workshops.
Children laughed as they made kites, music filled the air, and people of all ages and backgrounds got involved with real enthusiasm. It was more than just an event; it was a true celebration of the diversity and unity that defines our region.
The festival was also supported by many local leaders, showing just how important community-led events like this are. When leaders stand alongside our local groups, it sends a strong message that every culture, every story, and every neighbour matters.
And at the heart of it all was the Waitakere Chinese Association, who did an incredible job of creating an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone to enjoy. Events like the Dragon Boat Festival help bring people together.
They allow us to learn about each other’s cultures, share experiences, and build connections that strengthen our communities. In a world where it’s easy to feel divided, these moments of shared celebration remind us that we have so much more in common than we think. West Auckland is proudly multicultural, and this festival was a shining example of what happens when we come together to embrace that diversity.
It was a joy to be part of the day and to support an event that brought so much joy, learning, and togetherness to our community. A huge thank you to the Waitakere Chinese Association and everyone involved; you reminded us all of the power of community spirit.
