The nationwide charity Kidz Need Dadz is all about helping men be the best fathers they can. Established almost 25 years ago, Kidz Need Dadz provides much-needed support services for men facing parenting and separation challenges.

General Manager Craig McGuigan explains more: ‘We help with parenting, relationship separation, assistance with legal guidance, information on health and wellbeing services for men, and events for dads and families to meet up.’

It’s a broad remit, and services offered include online courses on parenting skills, one-on-one mentorship for fathers, and peer support groups for men facing separation challenges. Kidz Need Dadz can also connect fathers with other local services, such as counselling for relationship issues, budgeting assistance, and mental health providers.

‘We ensure dads have the guidance and resources they need to develop strong, positive relationships with their children,’ says Craig. The organisation also hosts a national weekly Zoom support group on Thursday evenings. Craig says the virtual meetup started during Covid but proved so successful that it’s still going strong.

He adds that it’s a great introduction to Kidz Need Dadz and its services. ‘This group provides a safe space to connect, share experiences and access best practice materials,’ Craig advises. Demand for the charity’s vital services is greater than ever. According to Craig, the cost-of-living crisis has increased demand for Kidz Need Dadz’ services as financial pressures exacerbate family tensions, often contributing to relationship breakdowns.

Craig says the organisation reaches between 300 and 500 dads in The West every year. Some will simply access resources, while others receive long-term support. And increasingly, the charity is also helping mums as it takes a whole-whānau approach.

Craig says the funding landscape for charities like Kidz Need Dads continues to be challenging. However, funding of $10,000 from the latest Your West Support Fund will make a massive difference. The money will contribute to the operating costs of the Henderson office and the locally based field worker.

‘By empowering dads and promoting positive fatherhood, we help improve outcomes for tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau,’ reports Craig.
