St Leonards Road School has shared with us the completion of their AstroTurf installation. In 2023, The Trusts provided $10,000 to the school to aid in the installation project. This development has transformed the school’s outdoor space, replacing the asphalt court with a safe, all-weather surface for the students’ playground.

The project was initiated to address the challenge of wet winter months, during which the school field often becomes unusable. The new Astroturf ensures that students now have a reliable space for play and sports throughout the year. This allows them to maintain their outdoor physical activities regardless of the weather.

“This new Astroturf area is more than just a sports surface – it represents a vital investment in the physical health and overall well-being of our students,” the school stated.

Instead of being confined indoors on rainy days, students can now engage in structured sports, physical education lessons, and free play, which are crucial for their physical development, social interactions, and mental well-being.

A key advantage of this upgrade is the increased usable play space. Previously, wet seasons often rendered outdoor areas muddy and limited opportunities for movement. The Astroturf’s durable and weather-resistant nature provides an extended, clean, and safe area for students to enjoy, promoting an active lifestyle and alleviating congestion in other parts of the school grounds.

The new Astroturf area isn’t just for school hours. It also provides a dry, safe space for families and the community to enjoy during events at the school, such as those held at night or on weekends.

Seeing the positive impact on the students and the community at St Leonards Road School is truly gratifying and highlights the importance of investing in the future of The West.
