Nestled between Henderson, Lincoln North, and Massey is the lush and peaceful Riverpark Reserve, which spans the Huruhuru Creek. It’s a popular escape for walkers, runners and families. Now, thanks to the efforts of the Predator Free Wai Huruhuru Creek initiative, the area is being restored and rejuvenated.
Predator Free Wai Huruhuru Creek is a community-based pest trapping, weeding and planting project. According to the project’s David Austin, Riverpark Reserve is a lovely bush and estuarine area that is being restored for local flora and fauna.
The group regularly holds community planting days. The most recent one in July was a huge success, and with many hands on deck, around 1200 native trees were planted.
The project also works hard to rid the Huruhuru Creek area of pests such as rats and possums. Predator Free Wai Huruhuru Creek has sponsorship from Predator Free NZ and is hoping to get more traps into neighbouring households. David says free traps are available for any residents who want to get involved.
Predator Free Wai Huruhuru Creek is a volunteer group, and money is always in tight supply. The group applied to the Your West Support Fund, and $4,647 was spent on eco-sourced native trees.
‘We purchased more than 700 trees, including mānuka, harakeke, kahikatea, karaka, tī kōuka and many more’ says David. He adds that the trees are thriving, and bird life is already returning to the area.
‘The regeneration of this land will give our community mana as we restore it to its rightful state,’ declares David.
While the group has undoubtedly made a fantastic start, plenty of work remains to be done. Check out the dedicated Facebook group if you would like to volunteer and get involved in this excellent initiative. It’s a great way to make friends with other locals, have fun, and do good in your neighbourhood.
And why not take advantage of the free pest traps? Not only are you protecting your own property, but you are also contributing to the broader community goal of getting rid of pests.
