Kumeu Cricket Club's programme bowls over young Westies

Kumeu Cricket Club is taking cricket into primary schools across The West in an exciting initiative. Operating in terms four and one, the have-a-go programme is already a smash hit.

Next year, Kumeu Cricket Club will celebrate its 80th anniversary. The club has a long and proud history of growing and developing the game out West. Members are drawn across the region – from Helensville to West Harbour, Swanson and beyond.

‘We believe cricket is a fantastic game,’ declares Chair Stephen Nobilo. He adds that cricket teaches players about teamwork and fair play. ‘It truly is a game that anyone can play, and it's a whole lot of fun,' says Stephen.

Located in Huapai Domain, Kumeu Cricket Club has a membership of around 700 and caters for players of all ages and abilities. ‘From premier grade cricket to Friday night beginners, there’s something for everyone,’ says Stephen.

A top priority for the club is building awareness of the game and encouraging participation among kids. Stephen says that young players have been a source of growth in the club in recent years. However, according to Stephen, the club has learned that the best way to reach new players is to take the game to them.

That’s been the driving force behind the introductory programme Kumeu Cricket Club has developed. Professional coaches deliver sessions in 23 primary schools in The West from as far afield as Whenuapai Primary to Ranui Primary, plus many more.

Funding from the Your West Support Fund of $4,380 has helped to get the programme off the ground. ‘We have over 100 sessions locked in in schools across The West, with hundreds of school kids taking part,’ reports Stephen. And delivering the sessions in schools means that all children can participate.

However, it's not just about cricket. Stephen says encouraging kids to be physically active and have fun with their mates is just as important. ‘We’re really stoked to be able to make a difference and grow the game we love,’ says Stephen.

The introductory sessions feed nicely into two interschool competitions run by Kumeu Cricket Club. Up to 30 schools compete for the coveted Norwest Cup in fun-filled tournaments held at Huapai Domain.

The cricket season has just started, so there is still time to take up your bat and get involved. Check out Kumeu Cricket Club’s website for more information.
