Green Bay School’s ahead of the game

Situated in the leafy Green Bay suburb, Green Bay School has been nurturing local youngsters since 1960. The school currently has around 650 students in years 1-8.

Principal Anand Muthoo sums up Green Bay's philosophy: ‘We offer our students the best learning opportunities so that they can experience success in all that they do.’ Health and education is a core part of the curriculum at Green Bay School. ‘We are a school that wants the best for our school community, and sport is a big part of that,’ advises Anand.

Students are encouraged to take part in a varied sports programme, including football, cricket, softball, netball and orienteering. One sport that has really taken off is volleyball. In 2021, the school installed an outdoor covered learning area, expanding the space available for sports and education outside the classroom.

Given the growing popularity of volleyball, Green Bay School approached the Your West Support Fund for help buying movable posts and nets.

‘The whole school community is delighted with the new volleyball courts,’ says Anand. The pole and nets can now be easily adjusted to suit the children’s different heights. And the posts are designed to be easily removed and stored so that the school can maximise the use of this vital covered learning space.

‘Volleyball is a popular sport at Green Bay School as part of the curriculum, during break times and before and after school when preparing for inter-school events,' says Anand. Now, lots more children can take part in all the fun. Even better, volleyball is available to after-school care providers and the school community.

The volleyball court is the latest in a series of exciting improvements at Green Bay. The junior school playground has been completely revamped and updated recently. Next in line is an upgrade to the senior school playground.

The Board and school community have been busy fundraising for the new senior playground and recently held a very successful sponsored Colour Run. The Colour Run is an obstacle course with a difference. Tamariki make their way through the fun run while being pelted with buckets of brightly coloured powder! And plenty of home-baking supplied by parents helped fuel the fun-filled day.

Green Bay School is situated at 131 Godley Road. Check out the school’s website for more information.
