When people think about “The Trusts”, they’re often talking about us as one organisation, and in many ways, that’s true. But behind the scenes, The Trusts is made up of two separate licensing trusts:

Portage Licensing Trust (PLT)

Waitākere Licensing Trust (WLT)

Both trusts share a commitment to supporting West Auckland communities, but they are separate legal entities with their own boards, responsibilities, and funding decisions.

A key difference between PLT and WLT is where their funding can be spent. Each trust is legally required to invest its funding within its own geographic area. This means:

WLT funding must support initiatives located in the WLT area

PLT funding must support initiatives located in the PLT area

When you apply for funding from The Trusts, you’re actually applying to one or both trusts, depending on where your initiative happens.

In your application, you must clearly explain:

  • Where your project will take place
  • Which community it will directly benefit
  • Whether it sits in the PLT area, the WLT area, or both

If your project operates across both areas, you may be eligible for support from both trusts, but only if this is clearly explained in your application.

Applications that don’t clearly show location and community impact may be delayed or deemed ineligible, even if the project itself is strong.

Still unsure about where your initiative falls within our boundaries? Visit https://thetrusts.co.nz/about-your-trusts/ to find out more.
