Oratia Bowling Club has cemented itself as a popular sporting and social hub, thanks to a major upgrade of its facilities and a growing programme of community events. With a newly installed artificial green, a destination café, and activities that draw in locals of all ages, the club is buzzing with energy.

Club Manager Natalie Stone says the artificial green has been transformative. ‘The new green is an integral part of the club and café. It helps form a social hub, allowing people to meet their neighbours, attend events like quiz nights, market days, Friday social evenings, and, of course, play bowls informally or competitively.’ Bowling is a low-impact sport that welcomes everyone, no matter their age or ability.

OBC reflects that spirit with an impressive range of options, from twilight social bowls and rookie roller sessions to tournaments and inter-club competitions. ‘There are not many sports that grandparents, parents, and grandchildren can play at the same time,’ says Natalie. ‘And that’s why bowls is so special.’ The club is also nurturing future bowlers through a new partnership with Oratia Primary School. Students are regularly invited to learn the basics and enjoy time on the green.

In November, OBC took another step toward inclusivity by hosting a highly successful Accessible Bowling Festival for people with additional needs. Thirty-five enthusiastic participants took part, filling the green with laughter, encouragement, and a real sense of achievement. No visit to OBC is complete without a stop at the club’s café. Known for its great coffee, delicious cakes, and yummy slices, it has become a destination in its own right for locals and visitors.

Behind the scenes, the new artificial green requires regular watering and rolling to stay in peak playing condition. When the club’s ageing irrigation system began to fail, OBC turned to the Your West Support Fund, receiving $2,900 to replace it with a modern, reliable system.

According to Natalie, the upgrade has been critical in ensuring the green can be used all year round. With summer in full swing, it’s an ideal time to head along, have a go, and see what makes Oratia Bowling Club such a valued part of the community.
