West Auckland recently celebrated a major step forward in local health and wellbeing with the opening of He Whare Korowai – Home From Home, a dedicated 24/7 hospice care facility delivered by Hospice West Auckland.

Officially opened in November 2025, this innovative inpatient service provides three hospice beds and an additional respite bed at Hospice House in Te Atatū Peninsula, ensuring whānau can access specialist end‑of‑life care without the stress of travelling outside the region. Designed to feel warm, personal, and deeply homely, He Whare Korowai truly reflects its name – a “cloak of protection.” After seeing the facility firsthand, it’s clear how thoughtfully it has been created. The spaces are comforting and dignified, offering an environment that respects the emotional needs of both patients and their loved ones. With Registered Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, and the trusted community-based palliative care team providing ongoing support, the service delivers the continuity of care West Aucklanders have long needed and deserved.

Already, the new facility is being recognised as an essential addition to the West, a place where residents can receive compassionate care close to home, surrounded by people who understand and value their community.

The Trusts were proud to support this milestone through a donation from our Trade business of mixed wine and beer valued at $968.52 to help Hospice West Auckland celebrate the opening of this important new service. It was a privilege to play a small part in bringing such a meaningful development to life for our community.
