From early-morning rallies to late-night games, Titirangi Badminton Club is buzzing with energy. Open daily from 7 am to 11 pm, it’s one of the few volunteer-led clubs in New Zealand offering such flexibility. And it’s proving a real hit with locals. Next year marks the club’s 60th anniversary, a milestone that speaks volumes about badminton’s enduring appeal.

‘It’s popular across all ages and communities as a safe, social and fun sport,’ says club president Natalie Toh. Whether you’re a competitive or a social player, there’s something for everyone at Titirangi Badminton Club.

Located in the beautiful Kowhai Reserve on Withers Road, the club boasts four courts, LED lighting, modern changing rooms and a mezzanine gallery where spectators can watch the action unfold. Automated membership and access systems have made it easier than ever to join in, whether you’re keen for a quick hit or a regular club match. ‘That flexibility has really opened the doors,’ says Natalie.

‘Not everyone wants to play competitively or can commit to a club night. Now, anyone can come and play when it suits them.’ The biggest growth has been among young players. The club now runs six dedicated junior sessions each week and a popular school holiday programme. ‘There’s a real shortage of affordable sports halls available at times families need them,’ Natalie explains. ‘We’re helping to fill that gap.’

Titirangi Badminton Club is powered by volunteers and supported by local funders such as the Your West Support Fund, which recently contributed $20,000 towards operational costs. That funding frees up resources for the club’s expansion, with plans underway to add four more courts to meet growing demand.

As the club looks ahead to its 60th year, Natalie and her team are focused on keeping badminton accessible, welcoming and fun. ‘It’s all about giving our community a place to play, connect and stay active,’ she says.
