Facilitator, coordinator, connector: Rānui Action Project (RAP) is a community development organisation, providing programmes and activities to support education, employment, and the wellbeing of locals. ‘Our aim is to remove barriers and bring services closer to the community,’ advises Jolene Mareko, RAP’s Manager.
Established 25 years ago, RAP has become a vital hub for local residents seeking resources or practical assistance. From its central location at 476 Swanson Road, RAP provides a range of services, programmes and activities, with many delivered by partner organisations. The Learner Licence Theory course is one of the most popular. This free course supports local people in gaining their learner’s licence by developing their understanding of the Road Code, with group discussions, practice tests, and activities. Also available is employment support, including CV preparation and assistance, as well as tips on job searching. And if your computer skills need updating, then IT support and advice are available weekly from one of RAP’s fantastic volunteers. Another critical aspect of RAP’s work is advocacy. Legal advice is available through Waitematā Community Law and Auckland Action Against Poverty visits regularly to help residents access benefits.
These are just some of the diverse range of essential programmes. And RAP’s services are needed now more than ever. ‘We’ve seen increasing numbers of residents seeking support due to financial hardship, housing insecurity and the long-lasting impact of 2023’s weather events,’ Jolene reports. Funding of $20,000 from the Your West Support Fund has provided RAP with much-needed financial security. Jolene says that the money has gone towards salary costs, property maintenance, IT costs, electricity and rates. ‘All the essential overhead expenses that keep the doors open and the lights on,’ reports Jolene. Now, RAP can continue to focus on what it does best: providing services to promote and strengthen community wellbeing in Rānui.
