For more than two decades, Waitākere Hindi School has helped young people in West Auckland connect with their language, culture, and heritage, fostering a strong sense of identity and belonging within the local Indian community.
President Saten Sharma says the school’s goal has always been simple: to keep the Hindi language and Indian traditions alive for future generations.
‘Students learn to read, write, and speak Hindi, but they also get to explore traditional Indian dance and music, including instruments like the tabla and harmonium,’ Saten explains.
Founded in 2001, the school has seen thousands of students graduate, many of whom have gone on to become community leaders. Operating on Sundays from St Dominic’s College in Henderson, the Waitākere Hindi School – West Wing now teaches around 95 students aged 5 to 18.
‘The children form great friendships that often last a lifetime,’ says Saten. ‘That sense of connection is one of the main reasons we’ve thrived for 25 years.’
Recently, the school identified a need to refresh its teaching curriculum to keep pace with modern learning approaches. ‘We realised it was time to revamp the curriculum to better meet our students’ needs,’ Saten says.
As a charitable trust run by a team of dedicated volunteers, support from community funders, including a $6,000 contribution from the Your West Support Fund, made the curriculum review possible.
The updated curriculum introduces a range of exciting improvements, including:
· A teacher’s guide to ensure consistent, high-quality teaching.
· Weekly learner outcomes to help students track their progress.
· Student activity books that encourage parents to get involved in their children’s learning.
‘We’ve had really positive feedback from our school community,’ Saten shares. ‘It’s especially rewarding that some of our former students helped develop these changes – a fantastic way to give back.’
Saten believes the new curriculum will make a lasting impact. ‘Our modernised approach will enrich learning and engagement for all our students,’ he says.
