Supporting people during times of crisis is what Manaaki Tāngata | Victim Support does best. Regardless of whether a crime or incident is reported to the police, the empathetic, expert team is available 24/7, with free support.
National Grants Specialist Denise Graham explains more: ‘We provide tailored immediate and short-term emotional support, practical assistance and referrals to other agencies,’ she advises. And that’s a lifeline for families and their whānau directly affected by crime, family harm and traumatic events. ‘We ensure people feel informed, empowered, safe and able to cope with the impact,’ Denise adds.
Demand for Victim Support’s services continues to grow, not least in West Auckland. Denise says that in the past 12 months, the organisation has responded to the needs of 3,920 people out West. And that’s an increase of 438 on the previous year. ‘Some of these incidents involved aggravated robbery, family harm, fire, homicide, rape, workplace accidents and suicides,’ explains Denise. She adds that for every victim receiving support, another ten people will also benefit, including whānau, friends, work colleagues, and employers. Victim Support also assists people through the criminal justice system and the coronial process.
Understanding the court system can be challenging at the best of times, let alone when you’re distressed. The team offers a welcome helping hand throughout the process. It takes a very special person to become a part of this fantastic organisation. Thanks in part to $20,000 from the Your West Support Fund, Victim Support is currently recruiting two new support workers to the Henderson-based team, which will increase the capability of frontline service delivery. The funding is being used to cover salary expenses and supervision costs.
Denise says that the whole community stands to benefit from the work of Victim Support. ‘We help victims to keep contributing to their community in their paid and voluntary work, keeping whānau together and reducing the ongoing economic and social costs of mental health issues associated with traumatic events,’ advises Denise.
