Imagine moving to a new country and having limited, if any, knowledge of the local language. Life would be pretty challenging, right? However, that’s the experience for many newly arrived asylum seekers, former refugees and migrants. The not-for-profit organisation English Language Partners is making a massive difference for these new Kiwis.
‘We help people learn English to settle, work and succeed in New Zealand,’ declares Katie Peckitt, Centre Manager for Auckland Central and West. She adds that the organisation teaches English to people from refugee and migrant backgrounds, providing them with the language skills needed for everyday life and work.
English Language Partners has 21 centres nationwide, including Auckland Central and West, based in New Lynn. The organisation also delivers classes in Henderson, Massey and Hobsonville Point.
Demand for courses is at an all-time high. ‘Currently, we have 621 learners enrolled in the Auckland Central and West Centre,’ reports Katie, who adds that many courses now have waitlists because the need is so great.
She says an additional 73 learners are working with a home tutor. ‘Some learners, like women with young children, are not able to attend classes, so volunteer tutors give them lessons at home,’ explains Katie.
English Language Partners is a registered charity that relies on government support and grants from public and private organisations. However, securing help towards operational costs can be challenging. In 2024, the organisation received a much-needed $20,000 from the Your West Support Fund.
‘The financial support has gone towards the rent expenses of our classroom and office space in New Lynn and has helped us to continue doing our amazing work,’ advises Katie.
The New Lynn premises provides an office space for central and west Auckland, plus classrooms and a resource library. Professional development for teachers and training for new volunteers all take place at New Lynn.
Having six months of rent covered thanks to the Your West Support Fund means that English Language Partners has more resources available to improve the learner and teacher experience at the centre.
The organisation is keen to hear from any enthusiastic Westies who would like to train as volunteer home tutors. Full support and comprehensive training are available for what is an incredibly rewarding opportunity.
You’ll find English Language Partners at Level 1, 3091 Great North Road, New Lynn. Check out the website for more information on the full range of English language courses or how to volunteer.
