Unmanageable debt can happen to anyone. However, the cost-of-living crisis means more Kiwis are struggling than ever. With its specialist debt service, Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is helping to transform the lives of many in The West with money worries.

CAP is part of an international network and was set up 17 years ago in New Zealand. According to Mandy Dhiman, Grants Writer, the organisation now has 46 debt help centres, from Whangārei down to Dunedin, and also runs free money management courses through another 142 local churches. Last year, 13% of CAP’s clients came from The West, says Mandy.

‘Money chaos impacts more than just material poverty,’ she advises. It also affects relationships and the physical and mental well-being of family members.

CAP’s free, non-judgemental service can make all the difference. ‘Whoever you are, whatever you believe – or don’t believe – you’re welcome at CAP,’ advises Mandy. Specially trained staff visit you at home. They work with you to understand your situation, including your income, expenses and money owed.

The next step involves preparing a sustainable budget that covers the essentials like rent and food and also includes some savings. The CAP team will also negotiate with creditors on your behalf and agree on a manageable repayment schedule.

‘Our advisers continue to journey with clients while they repay their debt for as long as it takes them to go debt-free,’ declares Mandy. And in an incredible achievement, CAP has helped 250 families in The West to become debt-free since the service was first set up.

Participation is free for families, and CAP relies on the support of donors and funders. The 2024 Your West Support Fund has provided $20,000 to support this much-needed service. ‘The help has ensured CAP’s support is available for families in The West with nowhere else to turn,’ says Mandy.

Mel’s family is just one of hundreds that benefit from CAP. ‘Rent. Power. Freaking out. Life was a panic room,’ declares Mel. However, the support of CAP has helped Mel get back on track. ‘CAP has given me my life,’ she advises.
