The tight-knit coastal community of Piha has faced its fair share of severe weather events, including last year’s Cyclone Gabrielle. However, thanks to the community’s combined efforts, a resilience plan is in place to mitigate the impacts of future events.

The council, Local Board, and several local organisations, including the Piha Ratepayers and Residents (R&R) Association, have worked on the plan for several years. The area is prone to adverse weather and experiences regular power outages. Road access, internet, and telephone lines can be cut off, separating the community from the rest of The West.

Set up in 1938, the Piha R&R has long promoted and advocated for locals’ needs. The association also owns and operates the post office and the building housing the community library. With over 200 members and many more on its database, Piha R&R is a strong voice for residents.

‘We have a proud history of promoting the wellbeing, environment and development of the Piha community,’ says Secretary Ken Cowan.

The iconic Piha Surf Lifesaving clubhouse has been identified as one of three local welfare centres. It’s a place where people can be evacuated in an emergency and come together to support each other. The on-site kitchens, medical room and bunks made it a natural choice.

Recognising the need for a dedicated generator at the Surf Lifesaving Club, the Piha community sprang into action. They raised funds to purchase a generator, ensuring the club is equipped to support the community in emergencies.

And now, thanks to a $3,995 grant from the Your West Support Fund, the generator’s initial maintenance costs are also covered. Piha R&R applied to the fund on behalf of the community.

‘The support means we can maintain this vital community asset and provide for our residents during any future emergency situations,’ declares Ken. He adds that the welfare centre at the Surf Lifesaving Club will be able to meet residents’ basic needs when they have lost water, power, and internet and mobile phone coverage.

Piha is now better able to withstand the impacts of future natural disasters. And despite recent challenges, the community has emerged stronger than ever.
