Give a Kid a Blanket launches winter campaign

Charity Give a Kid a Blanket has launched its winter appeal to keep families warm across Auckland. This campaign runs until June 26.

The Henderson based charity is calling for financial donations or gifts of practical items at these 60 drop-off points around Tāmaki Makaurau.

Members of our community are urged to donate quality pre-loved and new items that have been laundered, bagged or boxed. These can include new and excellent condition pre-loved blankets, sleeping bags, duvets, baby sleep sacks, winter bedding, duvet inners and covers, pyjamas, beanies, socks, jumpers, winter coats, raincoats, and Moses baskets. The charity is only able to accept new pillows and hot water bottles.

Founded in 2015, Give a Kid a Blanket was built on the belief that no child should go to bed cold. It is backed by a community of volunteers, donors and community service workers.

The movement started as a Community Activated Art Action led by artists Donna Turtle Sarten and Bernie Harfleet and has grown to become a non-profit registered charity. "We started as a winter project, "Bernie says. "The Trusts gave us its old Railside Rd offices in the winter of 2019. The Trusts were excited about what we were doing and offered us the space full-time. That's how we started working year-round."
Give a Kid a Blanket has given more than 60,000 blankets and more than 40,000 warmth and care items to the community since its inception.
