Caring For Our Communities With The Well Foundation

The Well Foundation is all about caring for local communities. The Foundation, which is the official charity of Waitakere Hospital, has recently launched a new mobile dental clinic. An amazing $261,538 was raised by the Foundation to purchase the van from a number of charitable organisations including $116,010 from the 2017 Million Dollar Mission.

There is, however, something very special about this particular van. It’s the very first self-powered van in the mobile fleet of Auckland Regional Dental Service. This means that dental nurses can now park the van almost anywhere and provide dental treatment without the need to plug into a local power source. Dental staff can independently power equipment, lights and computers.

The mobile van extends the reach of the dental service into the more remote, rural communities out West. And it also provides an opportunity to partner with other providers in delivering healthcare to communities in need.

As well as providing more choice for parents, the mobile van also means that families will spend less time travelling to access services.

The mobile dental service is available to children from birth up to year 8 at school. And it’s anticipated that up to 15 children a day will be treated or more than 3,000 over the course of a year.

The fight against tooth decay

Early detection and treatment is critical in the fight against tooth decay. Sadly, tooth decay is common in kids throughout Auckland and the mobile dental service will play an important role in educating parents. Cutting down on sugar, eating a healthy, balanced diet as well as regular brushing and check-ups are the foundation of good oral hygiene.

‘Early detection and early treatment are the most cost-effective and logical solutions to health issues for children and their families,’ advises Andrew Young, the Well Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer.

‘Thanks in part to the Million Dollar Mission, dental staff can now drive the self-powered van to where the community needs. This includes visiting preschools, maraes and community centres.’

‘Quite simply, the dental van means that we can take oral care directly into our local communities. And we’re very grateful to the Million Dollar Mission for helping to make it happen,’ concludes Andrew.
