Suburbs New Lynn Cricket Club Summer of Cricket
Summer is just around the corner, and Suburbs New Lynn Cricket Club (SNLCC) is eagerly anticipating another action-packed cricket season.
There was disappointment all-round when lockdown restrictions ended last season early. The new season starts on 31 October, and club members can’t wait to get out on the pitch.
SNLCC is one of the largest senior cricket clubs in the country. Over 50 teams compete in competitions across all grades and abilities.
‘We now have four senior teams playing in the premier grades, including a women’s team’ explains Club Manager, Kate Hillier-Cook. ‘And we’re the only club in Auckland to do so.’
Some very famous former players still retain strong links to the club. Current Black Caps such as Martin Guptill, Jeet Raval and Kyle Jamieson can often be seen at special events.
The club is very proud of its record in girls and women’s cricket. With female coaches and girls-only training nights, SNLCC has made great efforts to develop the women’s game at both junior and senior level.
Cricket For All Ages At Suburbs New Lynn
SNLCC is also strong in junior cricket and has over 450 players. The club runs a very successful in-house league on Friday evenings for the youngest players aged 5-7. With food available and the bar open, the Friday league is a big hit with kids and parents alike!
Alongside expert, professionally qualified coaches, the club also offers top-class facilities. These include a specially built indoor training centre. Regularly used by other sports such as rugby and hockey, the centre is available for private hire, making it a real community facility.
‘This season, we are also looking to upgrade our bar area and clubrooms,’ says Kate. And a warm welcome is always on offer to members both new and old.
Founded in 1972, SNLCC is looking forward to a very special celebration with the club’s 50th anniversary coming up.
‘We’re working on a full programme of events to mark this significant milestone,’ says Kate. ‘Keep an eye on our new-look website or Facebook page for all the details.’
Along with many other local sports clubs, The Trusts has been a long-time supporter of SNLCC. ‘We’re really grateful to The Trusts for all their help over the years. This year their support has helped to fund our head coach,’ reports Kate.
Situated at Binsted Road, New Lynn, registrations are now open for SNLCC. New players of all ages and abilities are welcome. To sign up, get in touch via their website.
