Media Statement: Temporary Closure of Stores

The Trusts are temporarily closing their West Liquor and Village Wines and Spirits outlets following two armed robberies within two days.

Chief Executive Simon Wickham, said the Trusts’ priority was the safety of customers and staff.

“While none of our staff were hurt physically, both incidents affected them considerably.  Our assessment is that the risk is higher than normal. We believe the most responsible position is to close temporarily out of concern for the safety of our people and our customers.  We are working closely with the Police on this matter and they are keeping us updated regarding their investigations.”

Mr Wickham said the situation would be assessed tomorrow (Tuesday 9 July) following further consultation with the Police regarding progress with their investigations.  An update on stores reopening would be provided before midday Tuesday. All staff rostered for work would be paid.

“We appreciate this is frustrating for customers, but we believe they will understand our duty is to keep both them and our people safe.”
