LiteClub Helps Local Sports Clubs And The Environment

An award-winning, ground-breaking programme is helping local sports clubs to reduce their environmental impact by being more efficient with water, electricity and waste. LiteClub is a free service that saves clubs valuable dollars while also making a big difference to the environment.

This nationwide programme is operated by the charitable trust Litefoot. Led by a group of well-known NZ sportspeople including golfer Michael Campbell, cricketer Brendon McCullum, the windsurfing legend Barbara Kendall as well as rugby star Conrad Smith, Litefoot uses sport’s competitiveness and team spirit to bring about real change. The aim is to transform the infrastructure of community sport across the country with more sustainable practices.

The LiteClub initiative is one of 48 community organisations and charities to receive funding from this year’s Million Dollar Mission. Thanks to the $5,015 of support, four local sports clubs have benefitted from the service. In partnership with Sport Waitakere, West End Rowing Club, West Auckland AFC, RNZAF Auckland Golf Club and Whenuapai Air Scouts Group were selected to participate.

Litefoot’s Antonia Gerlach explains the difference the service has made to the clubs:

“As well as providing lots of tips and advice, we introduced a number of practices that together will have a big impact on the bank balance of the clubs and the environment.

‘’We’ve upgraded 159 incandescent bulbs to more efficient LED lighting and have installed two water-saving devices in high flowing taps and single-flush toilets, thus conserving around 20,000 litres of water per year.

“In addition, we’ve fitted two metres of lagging to hot water pipes and installed four timers to commercial drinks fridges to reduce electricity consumption. And we’ve given the clubs 12 sorting-at-source bins thereby improving recycling practices.

“In total, over 8.3 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be prevented from entering our planet’s atmosphere. What’s more, collectively we’ve managed to save the clubs more than $20,000 over the lifetime of the free products installed.”

Certainly the local organisations involved are delighted with the service. West End Rowing Club’s David Neuhaus makes it clear the impact LiteClub has had:

“A big thank you to the LiteClub team! It’s such a fantastic service and we’re very grateful for all the new LED bulbs LiteClub has installed enabling us to save money on our energy bills. We will work through all the recommendations made and consider how we can further reduce our environmental impact.”

Reducing overhead costs for these local clubs means that they can spend extra resources where it really counts on frontline services and coaching.

What’s more, greener more sustainable operations means that the environment also comes out as a winner, which is good news for everyone.

LiteClub’s Antonia is very grateful to The Trusts and the West Auckland public for supporting the programme. “We’re really proud to be making a difference in West Auckland.”
