Partnership working in action with The Trusts & The Fono

When health and social services provider The Fono put out an SOS for help on Facebook, The Trusts was delighted to respond.

The Fono is one of the largest Pacific NGOs in the country. With a head office in Henderson, the organisation offers medical, community, and Whānau Ora services across Auckland.

During both Covid-19 lockdowns, The Fono has been super busy supporting families affected by the pandemic.

Ana Aitcheson, Social Services Manager at The Fono, explains more.

‘Food parcels are an essential part of our support service. And the demand has grown enormously since the outbreak of Covid-19.

‘After the first lockdown, I put out a plea on Facebook as we’d outgrown our distribution centre and desperately needed bigger premises.

‘We were so pleased when The Trusts stepped forward and offered us the use at no cost of the old West Liquor store in Te Atatu Peninsula.’

For The Trusts, answering the call for help was a no-brainer. Since opening a liquor store in the Peninsula’s new development at The Point, the old shop had been empty. Putting it to good use with The Fono made perfect sense.  After all, working with local agencies to support Westies is what The Trusts is all about.

‘The Trusts is proud to support an amazing organisation such as The Fono,’ says Chief Executive, Allan Pollard.

Ana says that the new distribution centre has made a massive difference.

‘It’s really cool as it’s got all of our signage, plenty of shelving and we’ve even got chiller space. It’s perfect.’

Since moving in, The Fono estimates they have delivered over 3,000 parcels to vulnerable families. This includes people in managed isolation facilities as well as those isolating at home.

However, there are still plenty of families in need throughout West Auckland.

And Ana has another SOS for businesses in the local community.

‘Our clients desperately need any essential household items, from non-perishable foods and toiletries through to cleaning products.

‘We’re also on the lookout for children’s games, puzzles and craft activities to keep kids busy if they’re unable to get to school.’
