Community Comes First For New Lynn Stags
The New Lynn Stags Rugby League Club has a long and proud history out West.
Founded back in 1967, the Club has fostered some great local rugby league talent including former Kiwi, Warriors and Melbourne Storm player Henry Perenara, as well as Patrick Ah Van who formerly played for the Warriors and now plays in France.
The club has also been recognised with several prestigious awards including 2015 Winner ARL Club of the Year, 2017 finalist Sport Waitakere Excellence Awards Club of the Year and 2016 NZRL finalist for Grassroots Club of the Year award.
However, it’s their community focus that the New Lynn Stags are most proud of.
‘We’re very much a welcoming, community-minded club,’ advises Barbara Murphy, Chairperson.
‘We have over 400 club members and a growing youth membership. We field teams in all the junior age groups from the under 6s right up to the under 18s. And we also have a number of junior players from the Kelston Deaf Unit.
‘In fact, a group of junior players will be competing in the semi-finals of the Warriors Mitre 10 Club Relay in early August.
‘We also have a premier side who play in Auckland’s top club competition, the Fox Memorial Championship Qualifying Series. And we have an over 35s masters side too, so there really is something for every player.’
The New Lynn Stags have just held another very successful annual Stags Backyard BBQ Fundraiser and Club Day.
‘With all our teams playing at home, it’s a fantastic community event with lots of spectators coming along to enjoy the club’s hospitality as well as some great footie,’ reports Barbara.
And with an impressive menu that includes a full rack of ribs, it’s no wonder the club day is always so popular with the locals!
Another initiative the club is proud of is the community playgroup which meets on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the clubrooms. A partnership between Healthy Families Waitakere, Sport Waitakere and New Zealand Rugby League, the very popular community playgroup was launched back in 2016.
‘This is a real opportunity for the club to give back to the community. Parents with young kids aged from 0-5 can connect with each other while their children learn and play in a supported, welcoming environment. But the best thing is it’s all free,’ advises Barbara.
What’s more, in 2018, the New Lynn Stags received over $22,500 from the Million Dollar Mission. The money has been put to good use with the purchase of new clubroom furniture. As a result the club has developed even more connections with the community by holding additional events in the clubrooms.
‘Community is important to us,’ says Barbara. ‘And I’m grateful to all the committee and volunteers who work so hard to make the New Lynn Stags such a great club.’
