Million Dollar Mission Recipients

Million Dollar Mission Update: Finalist selection is underway!

From 1 October to 15 November 2018, community organisations with West Auckland projects were invited to submit applications for their share of one million dollars of funding from The Trusts. This funding is given back from the profits we make through our retail liquor stores and hospitality venues.

We were inundated with applications from schools, sports clubs, charities and not-for-profit organisations with great projects for our community. Thank you to each and every organisation that applied for funding. The quality of the applications received makes it a tough job for our selection panel.

Meet the Million Dollar Mission Selection Panel

We are very happy to announce that television and radio personality, Duncan Garner will be on the Million Dollar Mission selection panel this year. Duncan is an award-winning journalist and is the current host of The AM show, which is broadcast on Three and Radio Live weekday mornings. He is also a West Auckland resident and big supporter of Bay Roskill Rugby League. Duncan joins Linda Vagana and Sir Bob Harvey as the independent members of the selection panel.

Linda Vagana is a former Silver Fern netballer and was a specialist coach for the Northern Mystics in the 2018 ANZ Premiership season. Linda grew up in West Auckland where she developed her love for sport and recreation. Linda is passionate about giving back to the West Auckland community and ensuring that there are plenty of opportunities for others growing up in our community.

Sir Bob Harvey is one of West Auckland’s most beloved citizens. He was the mayor of Waitakere City from 1992 until Auckland’s councils were amalgamated into the “super city” in 2010. Prior to becoming mayor, Sir Bob was also Deputy Chairman of the New Zealand Film Commission from 1986-1992.

“For almost half a century The Trusts have made a huge difference to our way of life in the West. What a contribution to the community it’s been. They have given back to our clubs and community life and our young people are better for it. The Million Dollar Mission continues the strong tradition of supporting well deserving community organisations in the West. I am delighted to be on the selection panel for the third year running,” says Sir Bob.

Our three independent selection panel members will choose the finalists along with Janet Clews and Ami Chand – elected members from Portage Licensing Trust – and Linda Cooper and Warren Flaunty from Waitakere Licensing Trust. Once they have made their decision, we will announce which projects will be put forward for the public to vote on in March 2019.

How the voting phase works

During the voting phase, members of the public can vote for the organisations they want to receive a share of one million dollars of community funding. You can vote once per day and every time you vote, $5 of The Trusts million dollar fund gets allocated to the organisation you have voted for. Voting continues until the million dollar fund has been allocated across each of the finalists.

We look forward to sharing the results of the selection phase with you in February and thank you for supporting our retail stores and hospitality venues – without your support the Million Dollar Mission wouldn’t be possible.

While we wait for those results, read how previous Million Dollar Mission recipients have used the funding they received to help the West Auckland community.
