A New Clubroom For Karekare Surf Lifesaving Club

Westies are justifiably proud of the west coast’s wild and beautiful beaches. Who doesn’t enjoy a dip in the sea or a fishing trip on a glorious summer’s day? Stunning though the likes of Piha and Karekare undoubtedly are, they are also some of the most dangerous beaches in the country. However, thanks to the fantastic work from the lifeguards at Karekare Surf Lifesaving Club, we can all enjoy the beach knowing that help is at hand if we need it. And so in partnership with the people of West Auckland through Million Dollar Mission voting, The Trusts is delighted to be able to give back to Karekare Surf Lifesaving Club.

With a long history of patrolling the beach and saving lives stretching back to 1935, Karekare Surf Lifesaving Club’s facilities are in urgent need of an upgrade. “The current facility is pretty much falling apart,” explains the Fundraising Chair, Stephen Pye. “We’re looking to build a new facility for the next one hundred years,” he continues.

Million Dollar Mission funding of $77,130 has contributed to an overall $2.7 million fundraising effort towards a new, state-of-the art facility for the surf lifesaving club.

“We want to get schools, community groups and businesses coming and staying and using the facility and the beach which will generate revenue for us in the long run,” advises Stephen.

Proposed building design

Let the building begin

Since applying to the Million Dollar Mission, Karekare Surf Lifesaving Club has made significant progress in getting the new building off the ground.

The funding is now all finalised and the long and sometimes difficult process of obtaining all the building and resource consents has been completed. The club is now on track to see the building project start on site in March 2019 with an estimated timeline for completion of 15 months.

“The ongoing support of The Trusts through Million Dollar Mission has been crucial to keeping our service alive,” reports Stephen.

As one of the busiest surf lifesaving clubs in the Auckland region with an enviable record of keeping the beach safe, there’s no doubting the importance of the work done by this
iconic club. And it’s certainly appreciated by the West Auckland community as demonstrated in the number of votes the club received in Million Dollar Mission voting.

“The Trusts are amazing supporters of surf lifesaving out West” advises Stephen. “We’re really grateful to The Trusts and the people of West Auckland for the support they give us.”
