What’s most notable about this year’s collection of athletes is the broad range of sports that are represented. From the more traditional sports of cricket and sailing, through to less well known ones like Brazilian ju-jitsu, the Don Oliver Youth Sport Foundation recognises and supports talent wherever it may be.
Several of these athletes have their sights on the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The support of the foundation could make all the difference to these sportsman and women achieving Olympic qualification or competing at the very highest levels of their chosen sports.
This year’s gold scholarship recipient, Kanah Andrews-Nahu, summed up just what a difference the scholarship will make to her:
‘The financial support from the foundation will allow me to compete at international Olympic qualifiers to pursue my dream of representing New Zealand at an Olympic Games. Without their help, this dream of mine would be much more challenging to achieve.’
In fact, Kanah has already achieved much on the international stage. Currently ranked number 1 in New Zealand, she holds over 140 New Zealand Olympic weightlifting records in the youth, junior and senior divisions.
Earlier this year she competed at the IWF Junior Worlds in Fiji where she won New Zealand’s first ever gold medal at a world weightlifting championship.
There’s no doubt that the future is bright for Kanah and all the other recipients of the Don Oliver scholarships. We wish these young athletes all the very best as they strive for excellence in their sports.
