Crucial Support For Piha Surf Life Saving
The summer is the busiest time of year for the lifeguards at Piha Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC). As well as patrolling the beach and carrying out rescues, the club also offers an extensive programme of education for children and youngsters including water and surf safety. An iconic Westie institution, Piha SLSC provides an essential service to the many tourists and locals who flock to enjoy the stunning scenery and amazing surf at Piha.
The Trusts through the Million Dollar Mission is proud to support the great work of Piha SLSC. And appreciation for a job well done is clearly shared by West Aucklanders generally as the club has been successful in securing public votes and obtaining funding in the first two rounds of the Million Dollar Mission.
In total Piha SLSC has received $54,120 which has been used to provide a wide range of vital life-saving rescue gear. Essential items purchased include:
- inflatable rescue boat trailer
- rescue tubes
- lifeguards’ uniforms
- rescue mannequins
- radio batteries.
In addition, the funding has provided essential repairs and maintenance for the rescue boats as well as vital first aid training for the lifeguards. Two gazebos have also been purchased, providing protection from the sun as well as shelter from the wind and rain.
Essential New Equipment
Having the most up-to-date tools of the trade is essential for the lifeguards who work in difficult and challenging circumstances every day. These items, plus the many more purchased with the help of the Million Dollar Mission, will make the job of the surf life savers that much easier.
It also means that Piha SLSC can continue to provide its education programme to children and young people in the West. Parents have become more aware of the need to teach good water skills to their children and the club’s junior surf programme is becoming very popular with the numbers participating increasing year on year. This has placed a strain on the club’s resources. Thankfully, the Million Dollar Mission, in supplying this essential equipment, is helping to ensure that the club can provide its young members with the skills and knowledge needed to become the next generation of qualified lifeguards.
Club president Peter Brown makes it clear just what a difference the funding has made: ‘Without this support from The Trusts we would not be able to fully resource our operations.’
‘Piha SLSC would either have to patrol the beach with reduced gear or further fundraise to get the required equipment.’
‘Piha SLSC thanks The Trusts for their support. Without it our job to save lives at Piha beach would be so much harder.’
So, if you’re enjoying the sun and surf at Piha this summer, spare a thought for the fantastic work that the lifeguards do to ensure our safety.
