Statement Regarding CPO Failures
We can confirm that two of our venues and one of our retail outlets failed a Council led-controlled purchase operation targeting sales of alcohol to minors over the weekend of 24 and 25 August 2019.
As this issue is subject to a hearing with the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority, we have been unable to comment on this to date. However, we can confirm the following facts.
It was extremely disappointing to learn of these breaches as we have a community mandate to sell alcohol responsibly and we take this very seriously, with a zero-tolerance approach to the sale of alcohol to minors.
In each of the three cases, our team members asked to see identification prior to making the sale, in line with their training, but made mistakes interpreting the birthdate or inputting the date to our point of sale system.
Until these failures, we had not failed a controlled purchase operation since 2013.
We undertook an immediate review to better understand what happened and to look at how we can further strengthen our systems to ensure we do not repeat these mistakes.
The review confirmed mistakes were made by three individual staff members, all of whom had completed industry-leading training in the responsible sale of alcohol.
All three employees involved are no longer employed by The Trusts.
Following a thorough investigation, we have found our training and ID checking systems are robust and we are taking extra steps to add new training modules to our system.
In our hospitality outlets we have introduced a new ‘Age Check Calculator’ button at point-of-sale to help team members determine the age of a customer based on their date of birth. A similar system is already in place in our retail outlets.
We are clear with everyone who works at The Trusts that we have zero tolerance for sales to minors and we will continue to ensure team members receive thorough training, with a focus on our policy of “if in doubt, do not serve”.
We will continue to engage constructively and proactively with the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority through the hearing process.
