Dance a jig at Waitematā Scottish Country Dancing Club

You don’t need to have a connection to Scotland to enjoy Scottish country dancing. Anyone is welcome to take part in this fun and social pastime at Waitematā Scottish Dancing Club.

The club is part of a nationwide network of 90 Scottish country dancing groups. Fun, fitness, and friendship are on offer.

‘No special clothing is required, and you don’t even need a partner,’ explains treasurer Beryl Connew. ‘Beginners’ classes are offered, and we have tutors who take you through all the steps,’ she adds.

All you need are flat shoes and plenty of enthusiasm. And before you know it, you’ll be dancing a jig or twirling a reel with the best of them. After all, who can resist the infectious beat of Celtic music?

Waitematā Scottish Country Dancing Club recently celebrated its 45th anniversary with a special ball. And several of the original members are still dancing! Country dancing is low impact, making it perfect for all ages and abilities.

The season runs from March to November. And the club meets on Tuesdays from 6.45 pm at Kelston Community Centre. There’s something for everyone, from first-timers to old hats looking to brush up on technique. And after all that energetic dancing, you can look forward to a refreshing cuppa at the end.

However, the pandemic has hit the club hard.

‘Between lockdowns and social distancing restrictions, we were unable to dance for a large chunk of last season,’ says Beryl.

According to Beryl, club finances were badly affected. However, she says funding from the Your West Support Fund came at just the right time.

‘We used the Your West Support Fund money to pay for hall hire,’ Beryl explains. She adds that it boosted the club’s finances and provided some certainty during the uncertain lockdown period.

Thankfully, the club is back to doing what it does best. So, if you want to try a new pastime, make friends and enjoy a fun evening out, get in touch with the club. They would love to hear from you.
